DARCY
Itâs always nice to receive a handful of cash after a long dayâs work. But the excitement is tempered somewhat by the fact that I donât know if I can trust the person paying me.
âThanks for your help today,â Parker says with a smile. âSame time again tomorrow?â
âYeah, of course,â I say, not wanting to reply with anything that might make Parker feel something is wrong. But there is something wrong, seriously wrong, and Iâve decided that Iâm going to try and find out what it is tonight.
The normal plan for me now would be to leave Joeâs place and head back to my own apartment and, ultimately, try and get some sleep as the day winds down to a close. But Iâm not going to do that. Instead, Iâm going to investigate the claims that Joe made to me earlier today when we were out for a walk and he said some very unsettling things.
He was talking about Irene, Parkerâs girlfriend, and how I needed to help her. He also mentioned that there was something in Parkerâs basement that warranted attention. But he didnât tell me any more, possibly because he doesnât know much else, or maybe because heâs too afraid to utter it. But he certainly told me enough for me to know what I have to do.
I have to follow Parker home tonight and find out where he lives.
Then I have to try and see what heâs hiding.
I intend to do that, but I canât let Parker know, so I have to make everything seem like it is fine.
âThank you,â I say to him as I put the money in my purse, before turning to his father who sits in the armchair in front of the television, watching another baseball game. âIâll see you tomorrow, Joe.â
Joe doesnât turn to look at me before I leave, choosing instead to lift a hand in the air in acknowledgement, but thatâs fine because I know heâs engrossed in the game. Or maybe itâs just because heâs already said enough to me today and that took a lot for him to do, so heâs reverting back to being quieter now his work is done.
âHave a good evening,â Parker says to me as I leave the apartment, but he has no clue what I really intend to do tonight.
As I get into the elevator and head down to ground level, not even I know the full itinerary for the rest of my day. My plan is to find a hiding spot outside this apartment building and wait to see if Parker leaves. I guess he will eventually, when his father is in bed, which could be a while, but Iâm prepared to wait. When he does leave, I will follow him, tailing him all the way back to his own home and then Iâll see what is waiting for me there.
As I leave the building and find myself what seems like a perfectly good hiding place behind several very large palm tree
